Don’t Start With the Job. Start With Your Life.
Most people look at what jobs are available and try to fit their lives around that. There’s another way to build a career.
When people decide they want to change careers, most of them do the same thing:
They open a job board. They look at what’s available. They find something that seems interesting. They apply.
And if they get the job, they figure out what kind of life that job allows them to live.
We call this the Reactive Way, and it’s completely backwards.
Because your career is supposed to support your life. Not the other way around.
So, what if you started at the end?
What if, instead of asking “What job can I get?”
You asked “What kind of life do I actually want?”
What do I value?
What kind of work gives me energy?
How do I want to spend my time?
How much freedom and autonomy do I want?
What kind of contribution do I want to make in the world?
What does success actually mean to me?
And just as importantly:
What are my deal breakers?
What am I not willing to tolerate?
These are very different questions from “Which job should I apply for?”
And they are much more likely to lead you to your destination.
The Creative Way
This is what we call the Creative Way of designing your career.
Instead of looking at what’s available and trying to squeeze yourself into one of the options, you start by getting clear about what you actually want.
Then you work backwards:
What kind of career could support that life?
What kind of work fits my values?
Where could my existing skills be useful?
Would that mean finding a better job?
Working independently?
Building my own business?
There isn’t one right answer.
The point is that you get to decide. You’re no longer a victim of whatever happens to be available on the job market. You’re making conscious choices about what you’re building.
This is where career change gets interesting
You don’t have to know the answer immediately.
In fact, most people don’t.
And very few people take the time to really ask themselves these questions.
